Dusty Springfield--

Dusty in London

(Rhino 75581)

More Dusty Spring-field from the Rhino vaults.

Not only has the label re-reissued the classic Dusty in Memphis--with ten bonus tracks, on top of the three bonus tracks they already put on their first reissue of this gem-- but they've also come out with a sort of companion piece.

In London consists of 24 tracks, recorded between 1968-70, which had not previously seen light on an American record. About half of these tunes are just okay, and one is horrible (a decidedly unneeded verion of Janis' "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart"), but the strongest ten or twelve songs are Dusty essentials: great material, done by a terrific performer in her prime. The Bacharach-David composition, "This Girl's In Love With You," a sultry Jobim tune, the shimmering "See All Her Faces" (the title track of a British Dusty album), Goffin-King's "Wasn't Born to Follow" (made famous by the Byrds on the Easy Rider soundtrack -- Dusty's version's almost as good) This is 1960's soul-fueled pop at its best, dreamy tunes sung by one of the great female vocalists we've had.
