
Thistle & Roses is made up of Paul Brockman on Fiddle and vocals, and Katherine Rickett on Hammered & Lap Dulcimers, Guitar, Psaltery and vocals
They feature traditional and contemporary arrangements of Scottish and Irish tunes and songs, ranging from haunting ballads to rollicking jigs and reels. Thistle & roses has perfomed in venues throughout Tidewater and at many east coast festivals including the Norfolk British & Irish Festival, the Elizabeth City Fall Festival, Hampton Bay Days, the Central Virginia Scottish Expo, and the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival.
They have produced two albums, "Life's Minor Pleasures" which was released in 1994, and "Wind on the Moor" released in 1996.
Katherine Rickett first began to play guitar in coffee houses while a student at Kent State, and has been performing on guitar and lap dulcimer for over 20 years. She took up hammered dulcimer in 1989, and now performs and teaches both hammered and lap dulcimer. She played with a variety of folk groups, including the Greater Metropolotan Pungo String Band and Mountain Laurel before beconing a founding member of Thistle & Roses, which formed in 1990.
Paul Brockman is an award winning Scottish fiddler, having distinguished himself in numerous east coast competions. He began studying fiddle in 1979, and has worked with such fiddling greats as Dr. John Turner and Bonnie Rideout. He and Katherine have played together since 1982.
