TR3 -- Shifting Currents
(TRCD 101)
Ya gotta give it up for Tim Reynolds, the multi-talented visionary behind the Charlottesville-based TR3. Reynolds hangs the likes of DiMeola (really!) and is backed here by an air-tight posse of seasoned jazz vets. The only downer is that most of the impressive arrangements stay all too safely within the bounds of low-key contemporary jazz (the word is "fuzak").
But the two exceptions to this, "In the Eleventh Hour" and "Idedication," showcase Reynolds and the boys kicking some serious butt in both Indian and African styles. If you are an accomplished musician and / or a fusion jazz enthusiast, TR3 will lift you out of your seat. If youre not either of these, it probably wont. Shifting Currents does make great music to wash dishes to, whoever you are.
